Most of the spice trade originates from the southern empires and from the far eastern kingdoms. It flows through the Free Cities and to all ports around the Southern Sea.

Most ports have a port master or admiral of the port who can put twenty or forty armed men into one or two longboats to deal with a smuggler’s ships; large problems would require support from the city’s militia, the lord’s retinue, or regular military units.

River boats and barges are numerous, and they typically can most anywhere from 1 to 30 tons of cargo, typically 20 tons in a deep river. Boats often travelled in flotillas or fleets for safety.
