Since antiquity, centuries before the Collapse, notions of the Just Price influenced many laws and many customary norms for exchanges of commodities and goods. Although often violated in practice, these laws and social norms helped to curb profiteering and the greediest price-gouging.

The Just Price typically was the cost of production plus amount high enough to provide a wage suitable for the station of the maker or manufacturer. Seeking the highest possible profit was always socially condemned and often politically illegal, depending upon the culture.

The Just Wage was a new idea formulated by the authors of The Republic’s Riches. It was one of the Republic’s initiatives for elevating the earnings of the large mass of poor laborers and poor peasants.
