All but the poorest knights would travel with at least one squire and one servant, even when traveling with an army. Wealthy knights or nobles would have a large retinue; if traveling independently, they would typically have a traveling household with them as well as some number of knights, men-at-arms, and archers.

Sworn vassals and household members would wear livery.
