In most navies operating in the Southern Sea, marines were essentially the armed oarsmen or seamen on ships. But Gavin Lezar had created a marine force for Simon Lezar’s merchant house and fleet of trading ships, Port Liberty had professional units of marines, and Khartras was forming its own marine units as part of its southern anti-piracy campaign.

During and after the war, Ravenwood started to form its own companies of professional marines and its progress was absorbed into the Republic, which also recruited some veteran officers and non-commissioned officers from Port Liberty’s and Gavin Lezar’s forces.
